King Center Programs

"We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now… This may well be mankind’s last chance to choose between chaos and community." Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

summit press conference

The King Center's approach is based on the concept that while the King legacy is one with a universal appeal—one that governments, nonprofits, thought-leaders and citizens alike have a desire to be a part of and support—no organization can realize his Dream alone. That is why the King Center strives to connect people and communities across the globe that recognize the power of Kingian Nonviolence as a solution to the world's pressing social justice issues.

Our work relies on four core strategies. We leverage the moral authority of the King legacy to:

  1. Enable collaborative partnerships across sectors by acting as an intermediary and convener.
  2. Create the next generation of peacemakers through nonviolent leadership development, with special emphasis on youth;
  3. Enlighten the global public through research leading to policy change and application; and
  4. Empower the global public through education and training.

We work with successful programs and organizations to focus the unique moral authority of the King legacy as a convener, facilitator and enabler. We seek to accelerate the quest for nonviolent social change by developing cross-sector partnerships to implement projects around the world, providing targeted training in Kingian nonviolence, fostering research and education in the core tenets of our mission, encouraging dialogue amongst global leaders, and striving to create the next generation of nonviolent peacemakers.

The King Center pursues this mission by leveraging the respective strengths of our five programs to develop collaborative projects that are tailored to the unique circumstances of our target communities. These projects encompass youth development, education and training, strategic dialogue, advocacy, policy research and leadership engagement, with the specific mix being determined by the unique dynamics of each situation. Those six programs are:
