Today, with the passing of Senator Ted Kennedy, the world has lost one of its greatest champions for the ideals of my father – freedom, peace, opportunity and equality. People across the world have been touched by the Senator’s work, whether it was in reforming education, brokering a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Northern Ireland, or leading the charge for universal health care. Senator Kennedy devoted his life to the dream that whether a man is rich or poor, or white or black, he deserves an equal opportunity to realize his full potential, and to live in peace.

Members the Gen II Historic Global Peace Initiative held their second formal meeting in Toronto. The group is made up of activists who are the children or grandchildren of peacemakers and human rights leaders. They were welcomed by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney on behalf of the government of Canada. It's shortly after noon, and teenagers who were taught their capital is Zagreb, in neighboring Croatia, are streaming out of Stolac High School. In an hour, their classrooms will be filled with children who have learned that their capital is Sarajevo, Bosnia.

On a day that President-elect Barack Obama has dedicated to service, it's fitting that we're sitting on a bleacher in the packed high school auditorium. And, on a day celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., it's also fitting to be in Ward 8, D.C.'s southernmost — and perhaps toughest — neighborhood, listening to Martin Luther King III remind the packed house about his father's famous call to arms: "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve."
